All You Ever Needed to Know About Local SEO

Before we even talk about going local, or try and understand why you should use “local SEO” at all, consider why SEO in the first place.

Let me guess – you have a website, or a webpage, which you want people to visit, on which you may be promoting products, services, some news or information. What good is that page if you don’t have visitors landing on it and going through your content? This is where SEO comes in.

Different channels can be used to promote a webpage. Social media, newsletters, Google Adwords and paid campaigns can work wonders for your webpage amongst the various other channels. However, no other channel will show you holistic results, for free without any media spent, like organic SEO.

Now our area of interest being local SEO, let me answer what local SEO is.

We know that SEO is all about ranking your webpage in SERPs based on the keywords you have targeted for that specific page. So how is local SEO different?

Consider the following searches:
Example 1:
•“Mobile phone store”
• “Mobile phone store in Vienna”

Example 2:
• “Transformer 3 tickets”
• “Transformer 3 tickets in London”

So what is different in each case?

The first search term uses a “what” while the second term uses a “what” and a “where”. And the results are much more logical. You may be based in Orange County, California and searching for a Macbook Air. What is the use if Google refers you to a store that is based in Tokyo?

To minimise such discrepancies in results and to help users get to the information they are looking for in the quickest possible time, Google has concentrated on local SEO. When users type the subject of the information coupled with the location they are in, Google will return the most relevant results.

Hence, Google will return the name of a mobile phone store in Vienna for the first example, and the name of an online store or a movie theatre, both based in London, for the second example. This has helped searchers immensely in reducing time taken to get hold of the most relevant results.

As a website owner, you too can achieve a lot from local SEO. Let us now have a quick look through how you can implement local SEO for your business website.

The best practices for Local SEO implementation

Before you dive in for local SEO, you should consider whether you really want to deliver local results to your readers. This may not be necessary if you are an information site dealing with global topics, like music, history, etc.
Local SEO will work best for local stores, local service providers and local establishments like a doctor, a restaurant, a mobile store, a local theatre, etc. You should have a physical address to share with your customers and should be specialised on catering to customers in a specific area.
You may also target a number of different localities. In such cases, you should have different webpages targeting each location for the best results. This is because Google tends to return results based on “centroid bias”. In other words, Google’s SERP will return webpages that present businesses that are in the location mentioned in the search term, or nearest to it. The ranks are likely to fall as the business location gets farther from the queried location.

The very first thing that might come to your mind is restructuring your keywords and key phrases by adding the locality of your business and target audience. This means, you add the restructured key phrases (example: “mobile phone store in Vienna” instead of “mobile phone store”) in the on-page content, meta descriptions and page titles. However, this is never enough.

Claim a local profile

Start with strengthening your local profile. Create a Google Plus local profile mentioning your services, your location, physical address and phone number. The more information you are able to add to the local profile, the better would be the results.
Google SERP pages are most likely to present your local Google profile information for local search result pages.

Create local citations

Location citations are also a very effective way to rank in local SEO SERPs. Create citation for your businesses on the most popular profiles, making sure that the information you share is identical on all the profiles.
Abbreviations, numbers and every other information presented in the citations should be identical and should match with what you have shared on your Google profile. Make sure you setup an account on Google Places as well.

Reviews - and a special look at Google Places

Reviews from local customers can work wonders for local SEO. More than any other review platform, reviews on Google Places work the best. Request customers on your website and other profiles (even offline if possible) to share their reviews and experience on your Google Places profile for the best results.

On-page elements

As discussed, do not miss out on adding your local details in the meta descriptions and titles. The title should mention your location. However, the meta description should ideally present more information, if possible, like your phone number.
Try to add your address details, phone number and the other information you have shared in your Google profile in the footer of the web page for even better results.

You need to get a bit more technical here. Add schema local markups and a KML (keyhole markup language) file on your server for better results. Schema local markups help search engines identify and present your location better.

Guest blog posts and outreach techniques

Another great way to add citation for your business is through outreach activities like guest blog posts. A blog post would generally have an author bio accompanying the content. Add your business details along with the author detail, mentioning the same information that you have shared on your Google profile.

Effect of algorithms – the “Pigeon Update”?

Google algorithms have been noted to influence local search results for quite some time. While the Hummingbird update definitely helped in making clear that Google is intending to focus more on local search results, wherever relevant, the new Pigeon Update simply adds on to it.
To be fair, Google has not really named this update. SearchEngineLand had decided to name it, and we really don’t have a problem with it yet.
According to Search Engine Land,
It looks like Yelp and other local directory-style sites are benefiting with higher visibility after the Pigeon update, at least in some verticals. And that seems logical since, as Google said, this update ties local results more closely to standard web ranking signals. That should benefit big directory sites like Yelp and TripAdvisor — sites that have stronger SEO signals than small, individual restaurants and hotels are likely to have.
This update works into a number of other factors to consider SERPs for local results, and actually adds more to the Hummingbird update. Hence, the Pigeon definitely requires a closer look at when you are considering improving your website to perform better for local SEO.

Mobile statistics

There is a lot that has influenced local search results, mobile searches being one of them. Google has evolved a lot based on the behaviour of people making searches on mobile devices, something that was evident after the Hummingbird update.
A look at some statistics will help you understand how important mobile users and mobile search queries prove to be today for Google.
• 91% American adults carry mobile phones.
• 56% American adults own smartphones.
• 63% mobile phone owners access mobile Internet.
• Wikipedia, Facebook and Amazonenjoy about 20% mobile traffic.
• 46% shoppers look for local products and services using their smartphones.
Based on the above figures, it is pretty clear why Google considers mobile queries so important. The bottom line is, your website should be properly optimised for mobile devices, which includes smartphones and tablets, for the best local SEO performance.

Social media

There are quite a few social media platforms that are crucial for your business website if you want to score well for local SEO. Faebook, Google Plus and Pinterest should be the three platforms that you should be looking into primarily, if your business relates to visitors on these platforms. Foursquare can be another platform to watch out for – if used properly it can drive commendable traffic to your website through local search.
Hence, if you feel that your business can gain from Local SEO, it would definitely be a good idea to go through the points we discussed above. Simple implementations, when done ethically and correctly, can give an unbelievable leverage to your website which it may be missing at present!

The “What”s, “Why”s and “How”s of Digital Analytics

When was the last time that you actually measured and analysed all the data you possessed? I am talking about any data, which may not necessarily be connected to a business or your customers. It can be your tax returns, your monthly bills, the number of steps you walk or jog each day, or anything else for that matter.
The truth is, we have access to a huge bank of data today, each and every one of us. It makes it tough for us to prioritise and analyse the information in hand, which often proves to be extremely necessary for us.
Today, I am primarily discussing analysis of data related to businesses and their online and digital presence – which makes digital analytics my particular area of discussion.
What is digital analytics?
Digital analytics can be a lot of things. However, in short, it is an analysis of data related to:
  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of your business data
  • Competitors’ data analysis
  • Marketing and industry analysis
  • Client and customer analysis
  • Planning and strategizing based on the above analyses to grow a business or an effort
In short, digital analytics is what you do to gain and measure data on your business, your competitors, your clients, the industry your business relates to. Such data can then be used to leverage your business and strategies the plans and direction they need to grow above the competition, improve quality, strengthen your brand recall and see better returns on investments.
The life of an ideal digital analyst
As a digital analyst, you will have a good number of things on your plate, each and every day. Studying customers is something that you would probably have to start with. You would need to analyse customer behaviour, identify the trends, anticipate the reactions and literally plan to improve the number of conversions based on this data.
There are many factors that need a close analysis here. These are:
  • Keyword data
  • Location based traffic analysis
  • Time based sales performance
  • Performance of the various marketing channels
  • Real time visitor behaviour on business websites
  • Analysis of sales based on the device being used
  • Analysis of change in behaviour based on changes in websites and online platforms
  • A-B testing and other test result analysis
  • Study of customer surveys, reviews, feedback and testimonials
  • Technical analysis of web portals and business websites
It is sad that as analysts we often pay more attention towards collecting and collating the above data than actually measuring, understanding and implementing it to help businesses grow.
How is it done?
All analysis must have a larger goal driving the process. There must be a solid reason why you would even want to invest your time on such an analysis. Therefore, as an analyst, your first priority would be to identify the objectives and understand what the outcomes are likely to be. This would also give you a clear indication of what data you should be looking for here.
For example, the objective of your analysis may be to understand how you can grow the traffic to your website by 10% within 2 months.
Next, you need a strategy in place. How do plan to acquire and accumulate the information and data that needs to be analysed? What channels will you be targeting and what are the likely tools that you should be using?
For example,
· You may want to implement Google Analytics code on your online platforms
· You may even want to run a survey that your clients and customers would fill up to get a reward
· You may look into social media channels to acquire data on customer behaviour as well
The outcome
Well, depending on how well you are able to interpret the data, you need to come up with new plans or may have to think about modifying your existing campaigns. Once again, the strategies and the new action plans must relate directly to the original objectives you had in the first place.
It is very easy to come across other areas that require your attention too. But concentrating on those areas may actually dilute the actual purpose of the analysis. You should plan another campaign to focus on such information, only after you have taken care of the current requirements!

An Interesting clip of Matt on how Google handles duplicate content

Matt released another video to help all webmasters and I find the link in his tweets.
Matt Cutts tweet
The video makes me clear about the duplicate content issue. Usually at the time of audit we check internal and external duplication to make my website content unique. But today I learned in depth watching this video, where he has stated “How does Google handle duplicate content?

According to matt cuts, 25 or 30 % of all the web content is duplicated. So, duplicate content does happen when people quote a paragraph and link the blog. So, it’s not the case that every single time a duplicate content is a spam. The fact is Google looks for duplicate content and when found, it often tries to group it all together, and treat it as if it’s just one piece of content. So, most of the time, suppose one is starting to return a set of search results, and there are two pages that are actually kind of identical, since they are duplicates, Google shows one of those pages and would crowd the other result out, and then one gets to the bottom of the search results.

Now that’s sad, it’s certainly the case that one does nothing but engages in content duplication and also it is done in an abusive, deceptive and malicious or in a manipulative way, it resorts the right to take action as spam.
If someone is showing content of another blog through RSS feed but not adding any extra value to the content, it would be more likely to be viewed as spam.

Matt also says,
“If one is automatically generating stuff that’s coming from nothing but an RSS feed one is not adding a lot of value so that duplicate content might be a little bit more likely to be viewed as spam.”
But when one is just making a regular website and he is worried, whether he has something on dot com and dot co dot uk or he might have two versions of terms and conditions, an older version or a newer version, or something like that. And that’s when a duplicate content happens all the time on the web. And it really don’t need to be stressed about the notion that one might have a little bit of duplicate content as long as one is not trying to massively copy from any journal or blogs.

Now I am a bit confused. As a SEO strategist I always suggest my clients to keep the content unique and 100% copyscape free as post panda the impact of duplicate content has become much more severe.
I learned three different type of duplication that can be a risky factor in SEO, which are: (1) True Duplication, (2) Near Duplication, and (3) Cross-domain Duplication.

But in this video matt stated that somewhere between 25% to 30% of the content on the web is duplicated and it does happen. So I think we can use someone’s statement as quotation and that will not consider as duplication but still 30% is huge.

Another point he has mentioned in the video that there is no reason to be worried that if you have multiple domain with same content. Then why will people use cross domain canonical tag. We know that search engines will generally take one version and filter the others out but still we need to use the canonical tag to avoid cross domain duplication. If we take this video as statement then we can say that Near Duplication, and Cross-domain Duplication is still considerable. Only we need to take care about true duplication.
What do you think?

Important Message to all guest bloggers "Google will penalize guest blogging sites"

Again I say content is king. As an SEO person, I also do not allow my Guest-Blogger friends to publish any low quality content. There are many who try to write content, oops! Spin content and try to publish in different websites to generate backlinks. This is really not a good step to SEO as Google pays regular attention to this kind of activities.

“Content is king” and Bill Gates also confirmed the same in his writing back in 1996. (Note: the content is not live now. The way-back machine helped me to find this). Thank you Mr. Craig Bailey to publish this article again.

If you still want to publish any spined content or any copied article with the source mentioned, that will not going to help you.
If you are a publisher (who manage blogs and looks for quality content) or a Guest writer who is looking for a quality blog to publish an article, both of you need to know the basic rules:
  • Rule Number One: Google always likes quality informative content and relevancy.
  • Rule Number Two: Google doesn't like copied & spun content and indecisive backlinks.
So it would be an alert rather a suggestion that please don’t allow guest bloggers to post any article, where the purpose is only to generate a link, please think about the readers also.
Do check this video by matts “What is Google's view on guest blogging for links?
If people are mistreating low quality guest posting in order to obtain a link without any effort to create an informative content, then according to matt, Google will certainly look into it. There is an alert in this video:
No one can recommend acceptance of this kind of tactics as a way of building links. Guest blogging with the similar topic on multiple blogs is another spam technique and the same goes for spinning articles too.
Here are five guidelines to all bloggers who accept guest post:
  • Number one: Authors must have a good track record of Guest blogging. And make sure they are not linking to any sites that are spammy.
  • Number Two: An author Bio link should go to the author profile page or to his/her own blog not to any commercial website.
  • Number three: The content must be unique and detailed to the topic. Do not receive any article that has already covered in any other blog.
  • Number Four: I find many bloggers provide author access to the guest blogger, please don’t do so. There are many bloggers who are so desperate and can do anything for money.
  • Number Five: No matter who writes the content, you should keep the ownership. As the writer can publish the same content to another blog and that will cause duplication. Publishing the content by their name is good but you should keep the rights.
Another set of messages that I would like to pass to the guest bloggers, who wants to publish their own unique content to webmasters blog as a guest writer:
  • Number one: Please check if the blog has good domain authority and quality traffic. Please do check with
  • Number Two: Please analyze the domain and make sure that is not built for advertising and link selling purpose only. You will find many blogs that have been created only to publish guest posts and earning money through adsence and selling links. I will suggest you please don’t go with those blogs as you won’t get quality reader there who will value your content.
  • Number Three: You may wish to publish your content in a blog that has good Pagerank, but please ensure it is not fake or dropped domain. Please do check with and also the recent cache in Google.
  • Number Four: Please do also check with SEO risky factors like one blog post is linking to finance site and another is linking to Viagra selling site. Make sure the blog is not selling links.
  • And Number Five: Please check the blog is already not banned with Google.
Hope this article will help you to be active in the SEO industry.

App Store Optimization is the new game in Digital marketing

We all know mobile app marketing is one the key techniques in most of digital marketing activities. And less people go for this option due to high budget. But with numerous challenging apps accessible within Google Play and iTunes, app store optimization (ASO) is now very crucial for driving traffic to the particular app; specifically for those which aren’t developed by any recognized brands. Nowadays, demand for an app is really high. As day by day Android and IOS users are increasing

See the latest statistics:

Looking at the charts we can easily understand how important app marketing is? Specially for Android

App Store Optimization will help you get more traffic in small budgets.

How do you improve your ranking in App Search Result Page?
Here’s a bit by bit direction on how to get outstanding results in app search result page, in the end driving more traffic to the app.
Your app Name
  • Choosing the right phrase that describes your app
The ultimate philosophy of Search engine optimization will also work for ASO.  Write your AppStore page Meta title and description using the right keywords that your targeted audience might be searching for.
v  Think about the keywords related to the app you want to sell.
v  Which keywords are also used in similar app
v  Search with primary keywords on the App Store and discover who the performers are.
v  To some extent less popular key phrase with medium competition will also help you a great deal.
v  Localize your keywords to make your app accepted in certain geographic locations.
  • Create an eye-catching icon or logo for your app
The app’s icon is one of the primary things a user will see about your app. Make sure the app icon should be eye-catching to make people click, and unique to express its use:
  • Write an unique description that forces user to download
v  Write a small brief about your app and user must read it within 5 seconds
v  Using bullet points would be an advantage
v  Emphasize on the USP of your app
v  Provide contact details for support.
‘Promoting your app on Google Plus will be an added advantage for Google Play‘
  • Use screenshots
One of the most significant aspects of promotion of your app on iTunes and Google Play is to use high-class screenshots. Based on how gorgeous it looks in the screenshots, most of the users will frame their mind about downloading.
Note: For iTunes the screenshots can be changed once you update, so ensure that you get it right.
v  Reviews and Ratings:
v  Well when I personally download any app from appstore, I always find the best rated app and also read the reviews. So you can ask you friends to write positive reviews to attract more users.
v  Make sure your app testing team writes their comments on the app and you can also ask your friend to give their valuable feedback and ratings.
  • Update your apps according to OS updates.
Create a video:
Create a video that show how the app works on your device. And publish it in your YouTube channel or you can also promote the same via Google plus or Facebook timeline. Now you will find more and more traffic to app.
People who have a bit more budget to advertise they certainly go for “Mobile display advertising” and “In-app advertising
I find there are many who searches for “Google play ranking algorithm”, Friends, we all know Google understand what is natural and there is nothing in Organic ASO, the ranking will always depend on installs vs. uninstalls rates, Good rating and reviews.

Enjoy creating new app and optimize to reach your targeted audience.

Emoticons vs. emotions

The widely used emoticons have their vivid place in our virtual communication and are not going to give their place to anything else. When we switch on the Internet there starts the stream of emoticons on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, etc.
Who can imagine his/her online communication without them? Our first message to a Facebook friend starts with a smile and ends with the same. But what do we get from it? What emotions do we have in real life while speaking with them via internet? All this emotions provide emoticons instead of us.
The emoticons have a very old history.According to Wikipedia, emoticons have been used since 19-th century. They have been used, firstly, for casual and humorous writing. But the digital proposal of emoticons has been on 19 of September, 1982. The idea belongs to Scott Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
We will remember Scott Fahlman longer, as feelings step by step give their place to signs and we start the process of becoming robots.
Remember your latest message or status on Facebook. I am sure that it contains at least this emoticons. They are everywhere, they smile, they giggle they cry but what do we feel, is not clear yet.
Face-to-face communication behind the mountains
Sometimes people are in need of someone who will sit next to them, and will look in his/her eyes. The society misses face-to-face communication, and you say technical development.
The majority of us do not feel how everything is being changed around us, only several years later we will arouse our heads and will see that there is no one even to talk with. Everyone is sitting in front of his/her computer and doing something. They do not have time to meet in real life, their communication is just through social networks. This is Social Media addiction which is no worse other serious diseases.
The growing disaster
The society is filled with widespread computerization. If once it was possible to sit in a cafe or somewhere else and by accident to get acquainted with people of the same interest, nowadays this kind habit has become vanished by laptops, iPhones, iPads. People gather in one place but do not even notice the existence of each other.
There was such time when we dreamed about being alone;being far from the eye of public, but today this distance between people is too large. I have fears that in the upcoming years the youth will be unable to communicate with real people. The gap between each other day by day becomes deeper.
How to avoid becoming a zombie
If you have decided to change your life and start it from a new list, then you may just start from the Internet. Imagine your life without it at least during the weekend. Call the closest friends, go together somewhere and have fun. While speaking look at each others’ eyes, and compare the smile of your friend with your favorite emoticon. Do you see the difference?
I agree that this is 21-st century and you think about ways to increase your twitter followers more than going countryside. But whatever it is do not forger friends of real life. Let it be 3 of them in real, than 3 hundred of them virtual.
I may sound pragmatic but these are the real feelings which a human being can feel: laughing, crying, singing, reading etc. If you have lacked face-to-face communication as well, if you are afraid of becoming a zombie, who spends the 80 per cent of his/her day on the internet than organize a party and enjoy your weekend with friends of real life.

Google’s Focus on Quality Standard through Penguin Update

All of us who knew about GooglePanda algorithm can make sense out of Google Penguin Update. Penguin is a modified version of the Panda. Although we don’t know why Google is using the names of animals in its effort to curb web spamming, yet we, who work on and through the internet on a daily basis, need to know about the updates. Penguin unlike Panda is more powerful in tracking down websites using black hat techniques to feature in the first few rankings of Google’s search results. Hence, it is a kind of warning to the webmasters to be careful regarding content and overall website quality.

feedback on recent penguine update

Penguin has already tracked down several websites featuring in the first few search results which do not deserve the place. According to Matt Cutts from Google, this is an attempt to make the search experience better for Google users by cutting down on the websites which are faking quality. These websites which use techniques like keyword stuffing, cloaking and hiding links and texts are making the search experience worse for users. The Penguin is going to rule with an iron fist in maintaining the strict quality standard of the websites featuring in the top search results.

This step was taken by Google to encourage webmasters to use white hat techniques to propel the ranking of their websites. This will not only help in maintaining the standard, but also in improving the user experience. Penguin is also capable of tracking duplicate content which is also employed by webmasters to win traffic. This is a popular black hat technique used wide across to spam Google. However, this is one of those areas where the Penguin algorithm might fail to function properly leaving room for errors. Penguin is not best while tracking duplicate content and moreover creating duplicate content is not penalized by Google. As far as the other black hat techniques are concerned, Penguin seems to be quite powerful in tracking them down.

So, if you are noticing a quick downfall in your website statistics, chances are that you have been hit by Penguin. However, do not get scared since there are ways in which you can avoid being hit and also ways which can help you recover from the downfall. One of the best ways to avoid being hit by Penguin is to use simple words and avoid industry jargon. Do guest posting carefully and avoid unnatural link exchange. With all the focus on quality, the time has become difficult for bloggers. Over optimization in any form will be punished once it is tracked through Penguin. However, in case you are hit and you think Google is wrong, you are welcome to file a reconsideration request explaining the fact.

Penguin is considerably a new update and there is every chance that it is flawed. Internet is already abuzz with a few criticisms regarding the functioning of Penguin algorithm. We have to wait and find out whether Penguin has been able to provide the best and desired results for Google and its users.

SEO technique by experts that may create or smash online community

The experts Jonathan Allen and Rich Tehrani have joined forces in a recent SEO and Online Communities webinar in order to give the audiences the latest research and best practices on SEO technique and Search Marketing tactics that you need to avoid. It was brought to light by Jonathan Allen and Rich Tehrani through the discussion that the online communities are becoming more and more popular because of SEO technique and good content which provides valuable information to its visitors, something the search engines would love to look for in a website.

2 Top techniques of SEO
Read on to know 2 top techniques of SEO:
Good content is necessary – During the webinar, it was pointed out by Allen and Tehrani that the latest search engine algorithm changes have thrown impale in some company’s ranking. This is because these companies are providing remuneration to the most valuable and good content. This shows that the companies are putting focus on their content which needs to be both SEO friendly as well as it should be able to generate good response from the readers. It was asked by a webinar attendee that how the knowledge base of industry or technology information have impact on the search engine results. The answer to this question is that the more information you will have, the better you will have your search ranking if your information is correct and organized properly. So, it is very important that you select the SEO technique carefully in order to present your information before the eyes of the readers.
Proper and credible content – Online communities can be said as the right way to present your credible content. It was asked by a participant the element design that works the best. The speaker replied that the navigation links which helps to find your content easily is key. You should not put too many advertisements or promotional content in a single page. Rather, you should try to make your web page informative and educational. This is the reason for the online communities to be so effective in helping SEO and provide a position to your company. The objective of the online communities is not only to promote a particular brand but also reveal that your company has the most valuable educational information that the customers generally look for. This will enable the visitors to visit your website again and again as long as your website is designed properly and has fresh content. You need to change the advertisements and the content of your website from time to time in order to have more and more customers to visit your website. Another way to attract more and more customers to your website is to spread the content on your website making it multi-page communities. This will help the users to find your content much easily. You should think about your users and develop your website according to that in order to help them understand properly.
SEO technique is not a very easy process. It is seen that the online communities get high rank in the search engine results in around 3-6 months. The terms you may be looking to rank your website is an important factor to let your website rank high in the search engine results. Finally, it is the content that matters the most.
